Browse All QuestionsWhat is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, when a woman's ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. It typically begins in the mid-to-late 40s (though it can start earlier) and can last anywhere from a few months to several years, ending when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a period — the point marked as menopause.
Can hormonal changes affect weight?
Yes. Shifting estrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause are linked to changes in where the body stores fat (often more around the abdomen) and can affect metabolism, appetite regulation, and muscle mass — all of which influence weight, independent of diet and exercise habits staying the same.
What is metabolic health?
Metabolic health refers to how well your body regulates blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and body fat — the underlying processes that determine risk for conditions like diabetes and heart disease. It's a broader, more useful picture of health than weight alone.
What's the link between sleep and metabolic health?
Poor or insufficient sleep disrupts the hormones that regulate hunger and blood sugar (including insulin, ghrelin, and cortisol), which can increase appetite, cravings, and insulin resistance over time. Prioritizing sleep is a legitimate metabolic health strategy, not just a comfort measure.
How much protein does a woman need each day?
General guidance is around 1.0–1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for most adult women, rising toward 1.2–1.6 g/kg for women who are more active, over 40, or focused on preserving muscle mass. Actual needs vary by individual — this is a starting point for a conversation, not a strict prescription.
What are healthy fats, and why do they matter hormonally?
Healthy fats — found in foods like nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish — are essential building blocks for hormone production, including estrogen and progesterone. Diets that are too low in fat can actually disrupt hormonal balance rather than support it.
What should women focus on in their 20s and early 30s?
This is the stage to build foundations — establishing good sleep, movement, and nutrition habits, understanding your baseline cycle and health markers, and addressing any early symptoms rather than dismissing them. Habits built now meaningfully shape how the next stages unfold.
When is the right time to start thinking about bone and heart health?
Earlier than most women expect — bone density peaks around the early 30s, and cardiovascular risk factors can begin shifting years before menopause itself. Starting attention to both in your 30s and 40s, rather than waiting for symptoms, gives meaningfully more room to protect long-term health.
