What Is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance happens when the body's cells stop responding as effectively to insulin, the hormone responsible for moving sugar out of the bloodstream and into cells for energy. In response, the pancreas produces more and more insulin to try to achieve the same effect — a compensation that can work for years before it starts to fail, which is part of why insulin resistance often goes unnoticed until it's fairly advanced.

Over time, as this compensation becomes less effective, blood sugar levels begin to rise, first in ways only detectable through specific blood tests, and eventually to the point of a formal prediabetes or type 2 diabetes diagnosis. This progression can take years, which means insulin resistance is often present — and often addressable — long before any diagnosis would be made.

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing insulin resistance: excess weight, particularly around the abdomen; low physical activity; poor sleep; chronic stress; and hormonal shifts, including those associated with perimenopause and menopause. Genetics and family history also play a meaningful role independent of lifestyle.

The encouraging part is that insulin resistance responds well to targeted changes: reducing refined carbohydrates and added sugar, increasing physical activity (particularly strength training), improving sleep, and managing stress can all measurably improve insulin sensitivity, sometimes within weeks to months.

Because early insulin resistance rarely causes noticeable symptoms, testing — rather than waiting to feel different — is the only reliable way to catch it early.
